The Team
The England Police RUFC team is currently made up of serving Police officers and support staff from 24 forces in England.
Some of the team have been part of the squad since the start achieving over 15 international caps whilst being part of the organic growth of the cub. Others have only recently received their first cap and become part of the EPRUFC journey. All the players, like the committee, give their time freely and have to take either annual leave or even unpaid leave to be able to play.
EPRUFC CHAIRMAN - MARK ROBERTS
Early in 2021 we were absolutely delighted that Mark agreed to become the Chairman of the EPRUFC, succeeding CC Stephen Watson.
CC Mark Roberts started his career when he joined the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) in 1993 and his tenure as Chief Constable of Cheshire Constabulary commenced on 24th April 2021.
Throughout his career, Mark has performed both investigative and uniform roles at each rank, up to Superintendent, including leading a syndicate on the GMP Major Investigation Team and as Head of Investigations at the North West Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) during which time he was awarded three commendations from the Director of the FBI. Mark completed the prestigious international Leadership in Counter Terrorism programme.
Mark has a great interest in sport and as part of his role in Greater Manchester Police was responsible for policing Old Trafford, including numerous high-profile matches and the Olympic football games held there. As a public order commander Mark was the Silver Commander during the 2011 riots in Manchester and Salford and was regularly deployed as the Head of Delegation when the England Football Team played abroad.
Mark joined South Yorkshire Police (SYP) in 2017 as DCC and is also the NPCC lead for Covert Legislation and Guidance. He was responsible for the UK’s policing support to EURO 2016 in France and the World Cup in Russia, complicated by events in Salisbury. He recently completed an independent review into football policing on behalf of Police Scotland.
In South Yorkshire, Mark was responsible for force performance during which time, SYP was the most improved force in the country for three consecutive years. HMICFRS now assess the force as ‘Good’ across every measure in the annual PEEL assessment and it is the only force in the country to be assessed as ‘Outstanding’ in respect of ethical and lawful leadership.
Mark is married and has two daughters. He has a master’s degree in Police Leadership and Management and was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal (QPM) last year for his distinguished service. Mark played rugby for Trafford Metrovicks in Sale from the age of 11.
EPRUFC honorary President - Lewis Moody MBE
Our Honorary President is Lewis Moody MBE. Lewis is one of the most decorated English rugby players to have played the game in both the amateur and professional eras.
Lewis Moody MBE will be remembered as one of England’s finest and most charismatic rugby players. The former England Captain and World Cup Winner was nicknamed Mad Dog for the endless commitment and fearlessness with which he played, he left everything on the pitch – arguably there has not been a more committed individual in the game. Earning 71 caps for his country, Moody has a host of accolades to his name including two Six Nations titles, seven Premiership triumphs and two Heineken Cup wins; the former England Captain is a true World rugby legend and a gentleman to boot. Lewis is also an adventurer having completed many personal and team challenges including Lands’ End to John O’Groats by bike and has walked to the North and South pole, to name but a few. He now focuses his energies into work in the education and charity sectors.
